Quality of life is the reason. We have all been lured to Mammoth because of the never-ending adventure of life and the desire to push the limits and capabilities of our minds and bodies during these adventures. Whether you live in Mammoth year-round or you travel clear across the world for a short visit, we all have this in common. Adventure.
For us coffee is a continuous adventure, always in pursuit of new brewing methods and taste profiles. A never-ending exploration of what is possible in coffee roasting and preparation. We take great pride in sharing all of this with the people we love in the place we enjoy the most.
Our passion and love of coffee began in the mid 90s. Throughout the years our family has worked in the coffee industry as baristas, managers and roasters. Then, in 2008, our passion for coffee took over everything and we started Black Velvet Coffee as a small 11-pound batch craft roaster with a dream of roasting amazing coffees with excellence and consistency. Over the years we sold coffee at farmers markets, dropped coffee on our neighbor’s doorsteps, built a coffee cart and served coffee at our local concerts and events, and finally in 2011, opened an espresso bar in our home town of Mammoth Lakes.
Join us on our Adventure and allow us to be a part of yours.
At BVC, the roasting process is a choreographed dance, a delicate balance of Art and Science. Watching, waiting, listening and smelling; all the while taking copious notes, calculating times, temperatures and airflow to ensure that each are balanced with precision to deliver an amazing coffee experience.
We roast 11 pounds of coffee down to small batches of 5 pounds to maintain an ideal environment for each of our coffee varietals. Every coffee reacts to heat and air flow differently, and the reactions come at different moments during the roasting process. Consequently, although each coffee we roast is carefully handled in a different way, the end goal of every roast is always the same – to bring forth that particular coffee’s unique flavor characteristics.
All our coffees are carefully selected based on consideration of geographic regions, farming practices, growth elevations, processing methods and taste profiles.
We roast all of our coffees, including Organic, Rain Forest Alliance, Micro Lot and Fair Trade coffees, with excellence and consistency.
Each bag of coffee is roasted fresh, per order. This insures that when you place your order you can be sure that you will receive the freshest coffee possible.
We ship via USPS Priority Mail, which is the fastest, cost-effective shipping method available for your coffee.
Roasting coffee and brewing craft beer parallel one another in many ways. Certainly, each has a place in our hearts. In 2012, we collaborated for our first time in the craft beer world with Mammoth Brewing Company to create a Mexican style Imperial Lager. That beer was an instant hit and ignited a creative fire. Since then we have collaborated on multiple beers and it was a natural progression for us to want to serve these amazing beers and others along side our coffees.
There are countless coffee brewing methods out there. Each approaches coffee making in a different way and yields different results in both taste and texture. After many years of research and experience, we have selected the following brewing methods for use in our espresso bar:
V60 Pour Over
Kyoto Style Cold Brew
Conical Style Cold Brew
Cold Brew Coffee is all about a pure unadulterated coffee experience. Because the extraction of coffee is done over time rather than via heat or pressure, we are able to preserve the entirety of the original flavor profile present in the coffee bean. When the extraction is complete, our cold brew coffee acquires a complex and dynamic taste profile that is very similar to an aged bourbon or scotch.
Cold Brew is available in two distinct styles (Kyoto and Conical). Each style is available in a 12oz cup, 17oz and and 64oz bottles.
Each of our loose-leaf organic teas is carefully sourced by growing practices and for its unique flavor characteristics.
All our teas are available in two size options.
8oz or 16oz bags
At BVC, we appreciate those who pour their own blood, sweat and tears into something they are passionate about. Our love for coffee naturally led to a love of wine. Because of the similar flavor profiles and tasting processes, wine perfectly fits into our world of coffee. We are honored to represent our friends and other excellent small winegrowers, who share our high value for sustainable, biodynamic farming practices and phenomenal wines. Our wine list will feature limited offerings of boutique wines that we are confident will not disappoint even the most discerning wine enthusiasts.
Born in the streets of Belgium and imported to Mammoth Lakes comes a delicious treat. Our Liege waffle is a rich, sweet and chewy waffle, featuring chunks of pearl sugar that caramelize both on the inside and outside of the waffle. Each waffle is prepared fresh, per order and served hot. Cooked golden brown, then covered with powder sugar or your choice of our unique toppings.
